Society
It was typically a male dominated society in Norway with the "requirement" that women needed a husband as men were the ones who were meant to work, own their own bank account and property. However, in the 1800s, women began to use literature to express themselves trying to get through to others and make them realize what they felt needed to change.

The Power
The constitution of Norway was adopted in 1814 and was considered the most democratic constitution worldwide. The same year Norway declared itself as an independent kingdom and free from monarchs. After 1851 bans on preaching were lifted making it a religious place and the ban on Judaism was lifted. From 1843-1875 Norway experienced the Great Boom, a period of significant economic growth.

Feminism
The 1800s showed great progress in reforming laws and social customs in the nation benefiting the women of Norway.

1866 - Law of free enterprise
1869 - Minimum age of marriage set as 21
1871 - The Big Four spoke out for women

Reform
At the time the play was produced, Norway was undergoing social and political reform. Feminism was a huge part of it. There was also an educational reform and a religious reform which allowed priests to train in Norway since 1811. 1864 the Norwegian constitution was commended to allow the freedom of religion. Half of the government must belong to the state church.
